Seismic Nepal Model G-2.1 - Earthquake Resilient Gabion House Model for Nepal National Building Code

The 2015 earthquake exposed the realities and challenges of seismic-resistant architecture in high elevation rural areas, especially with regard to 2-story structures. Given the lack of infrastructure and exposure to seismic construction techniques, reconstruction in rural high elevation regions faces many unique challenges. In our view, there is a fundamental need for 2-story designs, as to preserve rural Nepali culture. Our proposed gabion design presents the challenges, solutions, economics, and benefits for the people living in high elevation villages.
